The majority of fires onboard ships start in the engine room and the frequency of such fires is on the rise. Although the main cause of these fires may not be identical, there are certain similarities in the underlying patterns of the fires.

The following acts of piracy and armed robbery are allegedly committed against ships reported by IMO Member States or international organizations in consultative status.

Two incidents of armed robbery against ships in Asia (one each CAT 2 and CAT 4 incident). The CAT 2 incident occurred on board a bulk carrier, and CAT 4 incident on board a supply vessel. Both incidents occurred on board these ships while underway in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore (SOMS). In the CAT 2 incident, one crew member was assaulted with minor injury on his head, while the crew members of the supply vessel were not injured.
