Operation TIN CAN, a joint operation involving customs, police, and other agencies, successfully cracked down organized crime efforts that exploit the container supply chain to smuggle drugs.

The TIN CAN operation, which lasted from November 14 to December 9, 2022, involved 58 countries and their Enforcement Agencies, with support from major shipping lines affected by this dangerous phenomenon. The operation had tangible results, with 43 arrests and 158 drug seizures, including the seizure of 98,734 kilograms of cocaine and 314 kilograms of cannabis herbals.

Furthermore, failure to adhere to these requirements may result in the vessel facing detention during a Port State Control (PSC) inspection. The Club has noticed occasional misunderstandings regarding the suitable gas detection equipment needed for the transportation of Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) types A (Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI)), B, and C. In these cases, the ship’s crew mistakenly believe that gas detectors using catalytic or infrared principles would be adequate for the necessary monitoring task.

The crew of a Togo-flagged general cargo ship bound for one of Ukraine’s Danube River ports were evacuated early on Wednesday after an explosion on board near the Romanian port of Sulina, Romanian officials said.

The Seama ship reported an explosion early on Wednesday and requested the evacuation of the 12-person crew near Sulina, where the Danube flows into the Black Sea.

“At the moment the causes … are unclear, whether it was a mine or merely an explosion in the engine room,” Romanian Transport Minister Sorin Grindeanu told reporters.
