Over the past week, two incidents of armed robbery against ships in Asia (one actual incident and one attempted incident) 

Both incidents occurred in the eastbound lane of the Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS) of the Singapore Straits (SS). The actual incident (CAT 2) occurred onboard a tanker while underway northwest of Pulau Cula, Indonesia, on 23 Oct 2024. The attempted incident occurred onboard a bulk carrier while underway northeast of Pulau Cula, Indonesia, on 26 Oct 2024.

The European Union Naval Force (EUNAVFOR) has reported a new suspected pirate action group (PAG) departing from Somalia’s coast, signalling a possible resurgence in Somali piracy.

According to various reports, thirteen armed pirates set off from Ceel Huur and Ivo Hobyo, raising alarms across the shipping industry. To remind, in 2023, pirates hijacked two vessels, MV Ruen and MV Abdullah, which were liberated after months of negotiations.

According to Steamship Mutual, while there is a significantly higher exposure to the environment when working on an open deck during adverse weather, there can also be significant risks present in what could be considered sheltered workspaces. Activities may be urgently required to secure the safety of the vessel and its crew.
