A part of a Bangladesh-bound cargo vessel with fly ash collided with another ship and sunk in the Hooghly River, an Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) official said. The incident took place at Nischintapur in South 24 Parganas district, about 60 km from Kolkata in the early hours of Saturday.

In January 2023, seven incidents of armed robbery against ships (occurred in internal waters, archipelagic waters and territorial seas) were reported in Asia. No incident of piracy (occurred on high seas) was reported. The situation in the Singapore Strait (SS) is an area of concern, with reports of four incidents, account for 57% (four of seven incidents) of the total number of incidents in Asia in January 2023.

There continues to be no incident of abduction of crew for ransom in the Sulu-Celebes Seas and waters off Eastern Sabah in January 2023. The last known incident occurred on 17 Jan 20. As the threat of abduction of crew has diminished, the Philippine Coast Guard recommends downgrading the threat from ‘potentially high’ to ‘moderate’ which implies that ‘incidents are possible to occur but are relatively less severe in nature’.

Two incidents of armed robbery against ships in Asia, one CAT 3 and two CAT 4, were reported, between 14-20 February 2023.

Two incidents of armed robbery against ships in Asia (one CAT 3 incident and one CAT 4 incident). Both incidents occurred on board bulk carriers while underway in the Singapore Strait. Nothing was stolen from the ships and the crew members were not injured.

Container ship fires are a growing concern. Fires, originating from dangerous goods in containers, whether wrongfully declared or not, occur with alarming frequency. Such fires endanger the lives of the crew, harm the environment and cause damage to cargo and property.

 

The Cargo Incident Notification System (CINS) has published a new safety guidance for the stowage of classified dangerous goods onboard containerships.
