Lessons learned from an incident in which, the lid on a waste container barrel blew off due to a build-up of excessive pressure within the waste container, caused by hot ash being deposited inside.
The incident occurred when a vessel was headed to the pontoon to moor alongside her regular berth. As the vessels’ aft port quarter came alongside the pontoon, the deckhand used the boat hook to pick up the ‘in-situ’ mooring line and began the process of feeding the spliced eye through the fairlead. He then began placing the line over the bitts, this is where the deckhands’ fingers on his right hand became trapped, and serious injuries were sustained to three fingers.
Over the past week, no incident of piracy and armed robbery against ships in Asia was reported between 23rd – 29th April 2024.
Area of concern
The ships to continue to exercise enhanced vigilance when anchored or berthed at ports and anchorages, and transiting areas of concern, including the Straits of Malacca and Singapore; and the littoral States to increase patrols and enforcement in these areas.
A warning about the fact that countries in Latin America and the Caribbean have reported approximately 4.6 million cases of dengue this year, with Brazil alone surpassing 3 million suspected cases.
