Somalia’s government-led forces have captured an al Shabaab stronghold on the Indian Ocean coast, the defence minister said on Monday, in one of their most significant victories since launching an offensive against the Islamist group last year.

The forces took the port town of Harardhere as well as the nearby town of Galcad in central Somalia’s Galmudug region, Defence Minister Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur said in a broadcast on state-owned television.

Harardhere was a major base for pirates hijacking merchant ships until 2011. It was later taken over by al Shabaab, which first rose up against the government in 2007 before pledging its allegiance to al Qaeda.

A seafarer died from a suspected heart attack on a supramax bulker anchored off the port of Paradip in Odisha, India, on January 3.

According to local media, the post-mortem examination was delayed as officials waited for the 55,000-dwt Al Danah to berth, while the police informed that a probe would be ordered into the seafarer’s death if necessary.

Crew members discovered the body, while the captain informed the port authority.

The vessel had 23 crew members on board at the time, and had left Chittagong in Bangladesh last month, transporting cargo to Maharashtra.
