The Club has noticed occasional misunderstandings regarding the suitable gas detection equipment needed for the transportation of Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) types A (Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI)), B, and C. In these cases, the ship’s crew mistakenly believe that gas detectors using catalytic or infrared principles would be adequate for the necessary monitoring task.

The crew of a Togo-flagged general cargo ship bound for one of Ukraine’s Danube River ports were evacuated early on Wednesday after an explosion on board near the Romanian port of Sulina, Romanian officials said.

The Seama ship reported an explosion early on Wednesday and requested the evacuation of the 12-person crew near Sulina, where the Danube flows into the Black Sea.

“At the moment the causes … are unclear, whether it was a mine or merely an explosion in the engine room,” Romanian Transport Minister Sorin Grindeanu told reporters.

A safety scenario for September describing an incident where there was loss of anchor in bad weather, to provide lessons learned.

The vessel was waiting for its berth to become available, so the decision was made to anchor. A pre-anchor briefing was held on the bridge, regarding how many shackles should be used and different tasks allocated to the crew during the anchoring operation. One week earlier the bosun had inspected the windlass including the brake linings and had reported that all was in good condition.

The weather forecast warned about rough weather the following day. The Master informed the bridge team that he would make a final decision later. The anchoring party consisted of the Chief Officer, bosun and two ABs. The bosun was controlling the brake and the Chief Officer was reporting to the bridge, and giving orders to the bosun and ABs. This was the first time the crew had anchored at this anchorage.
