Two incidents of armed robbery against ships (one CAT 2 and one attempted) in Asia, between 11th and 15th January 2023.

Both incidents occurred onboard bulk carriers on 4 Jan 2024. One incident occurred onboard the ship while anchored at Balikpapan Anchorage, Indonesia; and the other incident onboard the ship while underway in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore (SOMS).

Background 

On October 7, 2023, a significant escalation occurred as Palestinian militant groups, predominantly Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad launched a major attack on Israel from the Gaza Strip. The assault involved rocket barrages and vehicle-transported attacks directed at Israeli communities resulting in numerous casualties.

On January 12, Houthi rebels launched a missile strike near Yemen, targeting a tanker that was transporting Russian oil.

The incident occurred off the coast of Yemen, with the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reporting the missile launch 90 nautical miles southeast of Aden. The tanker’s master reported the missile landing in the water about 400-500 meters away, followed by three small craft. Fortunately, there were no injuries or damage to the vessel.
