A drone struck the U.S.-owned floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) Energos Winter at Egypt’s Mediterranean port of Damietta on 29 July, triggering a fire that reportedly spread to the LNG carrier Gaslog Salem, in what could signal a further expansion of the conflict across the Middle East.
Multiple security and trading sources, reported that the Energos Winter was hit on its starboard side by an unidentified projectile. The fire was later extinguished, while the cause of the incident has not been officially confirmed.
Egypt’s Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources confirmed that a fire had broken out on a regasification vessel and a storage vessel at Damietta port but did not mention a drone strike or identify the cause.
The Ministry confirms that the incident did not result in any injuries or human casualties, and that emergency teams, in coordination with the competent technical authorities, are continuing to complete the work and take the necessary measures in accordance with approved standards
The incident comes amid escalating regional tensions following Iranian missile strikes on U.S. forces in Jordan, U.S. and Saudi strikes on Iran-backed groups in Iraq, and renewed Houthi threats against shipping.
Responsibility for the attack has not been established.
