Monthly Piracy Report for the month of October 2024.
The following acts of piracy and armed robbery are allegedly committed against ships during the month of October 2024, reported by IMO Member States or international organizations in consultative status. A total of fourteen incidents was reported. Some of the incidents include:
- In international waters
- Al Derwazah, Tanker, Kuwait
The incident: While underway, six perpetrators armed with knives entered the engine room and held the Chief Engineer (C/E), tying him with a rope. They stole his personal belongings, including a gold chain, tablet, and mobile phone, as well as ship’s engine spares. The alarm was raised, and the crew was mustered to conduct a search onboard, but no perpetrators were found. All crew members were accounted for and uninjured. The master reported the incident to Singapore Vessel Traffic Information System (VTIS) West. A safety navigational broadcast was initiated, and the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) Maritime Security Task Force (MSTF) and Singapore Police Coast Guard (PCG) were notified. Information was shared with Indonesian authorities.

Approximately 2.5 nm northwest of Pulau Cula (Indonesia), in the eastbound lane of the Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS).
- Torex, Tanker, Cook Islands
The incident: While underway, five perpetrators armed with knives boarded the ship from the stern and entered the engine room. The alarm was raised, and the crew was mustered to conduct a search, but no perpetrators were found. Some engine spares were stolen. The crew was not injured. The master reported the incident to Singapore VTIS, and a safety navigational broadcast was initiated. The RSN MSTF and Singapore PCG were notified, and information was shared with Indonesian authorities.

Approximately 2.3 nm north of Pulau Cula (Indonesia), in the eastbound lane of the TSS.
- Nyon, Bulk Carrier, Marshall Islands
The incident: While underway, five perpetrators armed with knives were sighted in the engine room. The alarm was raised, and the crew was mustered to conduct a search onboard. No perpetrators were found, and nothing was stolen. All crew members were accounted for and safe. The master reported the incident to Singapore VTIS West. A safety navigational broadcast was initiated, and the RSN MSTF and Singapore PCG were notified. Upon the ship’s arrival at Singapore Anchorage, the PCG conducted a search onboard, but no perpetrators were found. Information about the incident was shared with Indonesian authorities.

Approximately 4.6 nm east of Pulau Karimun Kecil (Indonesia), in the eastbound lane of the TSS.
- Aspasia Luck, Bulk Carrier, Liberia
The incident: While underway, ten perpetrators armed with knives were sighted in the engine room. The alarm was raised, and the crew was mustered to conduct a search onboard. No perpetrators were found, but some engine spares were stolen. All crew members were accounted for and uninjured. The master reported the incident to Singapore VTIS West. A safety navigational broadcast was initiated, and the RSN MSTF and Singapore PCG were notified. Upon the ship’s arrival at Singapore Anchorage, the PCG conducted a search onboard, but no perpetrators were found. Information about the incident was shared with Indonesian authorities.

- Maran Spirit, Bulk Carrier, Malta
The incident: While underway, one perpetrator was sighted in the engine room. The alarm was raised, and the crew was mustered to conduct a search onboard. No perpetrators were found, and nothing was stolen. All crew members were accounted for and safe. The master reported the incident to Singapore VTIS West. A safety navigational broadcast was initiated, and the RSN MSTF and Singapore PCG were notified. Upon the ship’s arrival at Singapore Anchorage, the PCG conducted a search onboard, but no perpetrators were found. Information about the incident was shared with Indonesian authorities.

About 2.8 nm north of Pulau Cula (Indonesia), in the eastbound lane of the Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS).
- GL La Paz, Bulk Carrier, Panama
The incident: While underway, four armed robbers boarded the ship and stole engine spares. The duty oiler encountered the robbers in the engine room and raised the alarm. The robbers pointed guns at the crew before escaping. The master reported the incident to local authorities. PRC relayed the message to the Singapore PCG and the Indonesian Marine Police HQ.
