President Julius Maada Bio said on Sunday that numerous attackers who broke into jails and targeted a vital military station in the capital Freetown had been apprehended by Sierra Leonean security forces.
The communications ministry issued in a statement that an indefinite curfew that was put in place during the search for the attackers has been removed as of 6:00 a.m. on November 27. It said that a new one is enforced daily from 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. until further notice, beginning on the same day.
Most of the leaders have been arrested. The attackers are being repelled by a combined team of security forces and police. Calm has been restored.
According to Bloomberg, after invading the nation’s jails, the attackers freed the prisoners while holding some hostages.
The events in Sierra Leone follow military coups in Mali, Guinea, Burkina Faso, and Chad over the previous three years, as well as in Gabon and Niger this year. The Economic Community of West African States is now negotiating to overthrow the coup in Niger, which took place in July and resulted in the creation of a belt of military-run nations from the Atlantic to the Red Sea.
According to Bangura, there were break-ins at both the main jail and the special court prison, which house the most dangerous criminals. He added that three troops had serious injuries and that one of the assailants had been killed.
As explained, the aggression was a plot by “certain individuals” to acquire arms and disturb the peace and constitutional order in the country, the regional bloc known by its acronym Ecowas, said in a statement. “Ecowas condemns this act and calls for the arrest and prosecution of all participants in this illegal act.”
