A cargo ship, “MV Prince of Ghashiakhali,” capsized in the Pashur Channel of Mongla Port in Bagerhat, due to cyclone Midhili’s severe weather.
In particular, the incident happened when the ship struck a sandbar close to Kananagar, causing a hull breach.
As informed, the ship has successfully completed the loading of cargo from a foreign commercial vessel in the Harbaria region. and was en route to Nawapara in Jashore, carrying a substantial load of 800 tonnes of coal.
Luckily, according to vice president of the Bangladesh Lighter Workers Association, Mainul Hossain Mintu, the 12 crew members survived.
Concerns have been raised regarding the environmental risks associated with ship sinkings involving coal transportation. The primary cause for alarm stems from the potential contamination of water and the subsequent threat posed to aquatic life due to the toxic particles present in coal.
