MSC Eagle F, a Liberian-flagged container ship that had grounded Monday morning five kilometres off the coast of Mombasa, Kenya, has successfully been refloated.

The 143-metre vessel’s engine failed as it neared the passage from Port Louis, with Mauritius being its last port of call, Kenya Ports Authority reports. The successful recovery operation was carried out in collaboration with a team from the Southern Engineering Company (SECO), whose tug Alpha Falcao remained by the ship overnight in case the crew needed to be evacuated.

The three tugboats securely dragged the ship, which was carrying 426 TEUs or 9709 metric tonnes, into the Port, putting an end to the grounding. The canal was unaffected, and ship traffic continued as normal.
