A container ship caught fire in island of Kea, Greece, for an unknown reason in one of its containers, which was immediately confined by the crew.
Luckily, the vessel is expected to safely anchor in Piraeus. The feeder is accompanied by the Coast Guard and a fire-fighting vessel. It will anchor on a specific area in the commercial port, in order to unload the container which caused the fire and check the condition of the cargo.
The Hong Kong-flagged ship is carrying 26 crew members and is loaded with 1,517 containers. The vessel had departed from the port of Piraeus for Thessaloniki.
Cargo fires continue to pose a significant safety concern in the maritime industry. The fires in cargo areas are rare, compared with fires in the engine room or fires originating from an electrical unit. When a fire starts anywhere on board, it is a serious issue as it can spread quickly and be particularly difficult to control.
