On 12th September, a Mexican cargo ship ran aground at the Masatlán dock. The ship was evacuated as a precaution while authorities worked all night to stabilise it.
In particular, the cargo ship was the Chiapas Star. According to the company the cause of the incident is under investigation at this time.
As media sources informed, the crew made a ballasting error as they were getting ready to leave, flooding the tanks and causing the ship to list. At first, it was thought that the ship had been loaded incorrectly.
As explained, the vessel is 502 feet in length and 20,400 dwt. It is carrying up to 1,300 TEU and has two general cargo cranes.
Currently it appears that primarily operating a feeder service to transfer both general freight and containers in the Sea of Cortez area.
According to accounts, the ship started to list away from the pier last night, September 11, as it was loading cargo after arriving from Lazaro Cardenas on September 10.
Luckily, no injuries were reported but there was a concern that the ship could lose cargo into the harbor or lose stability if the list continued to increase.
Furthermore, the Mexican Navy and ASIPONA Mazatlán make efforts to rebalance the vessel and bring it back to an even keel.
