The Indonesian authorities, with the assistance of fishermen, successfully salvaged all 11 missing crew members of a vessel that sank in the Malacca Strait.
According to the Strait Times, on July 31st, a ship carrying 11 crew members was reported to have sunk in the Malacca Strait due to a leak caused by high waves. The ship, KM Lintang Timur Samudera, was on its way from Tanjung Balai Asahan to Malaysia.
Budi Cahyadi, the chief of the Pekanbaru rescue agency, complimented the efforts of local fisherman who discovered the ship and its crew in distress and rushed to the rescue, local news agencies claim.
The ship experienced a leakage as a result of being hit by massive waves at the ‘one fathom bank’
Other rescue organisations, including those in Medan and Dumai, as well as the Malaysian Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC), assisted the efforts.
The sinking of the ship is thought to have occurred at the Malacca Strait’s Exclusive Economic Zone.
