On 20th March, container ship HYUNDAI TOKYO on arrival from Ningbo in full load, struck pier while berthing at Kaohsiung Port.

According to port officials, the speed of the ship was too fast at the moment of contact, and sent a warning by radio before the incident occurred.

The 2006-built, 6,800 teu Hyundai Tokyo ploughed straight into Pier 77, causing sizeable damage to to the concrete quayside.

The pilot of container ship was found to be intoxicated.

Divers are assessing the damage done to the pier with significant compensation claims expected.
