The directorate general of shipping at Mumbai has issued a Merchant Shipping Notice to urge industry stakeholders to ensure strict compliance of registration and de-registration process of Emergency Position Indications Radio Beacons (EPIRBs) on board ships

According to the regulation IV/ 7.1 of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) 1974, every ship shall be provided with Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBs) shall be type approved by the Administration and shall conform to appropriate performance standards not inferior to those adopted by the IMO.

Recognizing the need of registering or de-registering the EPIRBs, the Indian Directorate General of Shipping urges all radio surveyors, classification societies, shipping companies, ship owners, ship operators, shipmasters and scrapyards to ensure strict compliance of registration and de-registration process of EPIRBs on board ships.
